French media are all reporting a revival of the French New Wave. Of course the French New Wave had much less impact than what happened in the UK, where it was much more than a sub-genre of rock music.
In the UK, New Wave was rooted in a strong cultural movement. Nothing like that in France in the 80’s, but now, to a lot of people’s surprise, New Wave is coming back, thirty years later. My favourite artist is La Féline, who describes her music as “innocent pop of the 80’s meets and marries the darker visions issuing from New Wave and Krautrock”, even if Lescop seems to have been crowned ambassador of the New Wave revival by every music journalist in the country. And let’s not forget about Aline – former Young Michelin, very much inspired by The Smiths.
